"Combining micro-photography, animation, and actuality footage, this film explains the formation and development of the Sudbury ore body in northern Ontario, and details the smelting of ore at an International Nickel Company of Canada plant. Footage shows nickel ore being crushed, milled, and classified by a cyclone classifier; tested by a computer-run spectrochemical analysis; separated from waste rock and other elements by flotation; dried and roasted in a fluid bed roaster; melted in a multi-hearth reverberatory furnace; treated by convertors; separated further from impurities by magnetic sorting, flotation, and roasting; and refined by electrolysis. Final sequences deal with the by-products of refining and alternatives to smelting, such as hydro-metallurgy and the carbonyl process."
