"PROUD WOMEN, STRONG STEPS tells the stories of two immigrant women in Canada, but the impact of the stories goes far beyond the individuals. The film takes a close look at the stresses immigrant women and women of colour face in Canada, and suggests some of the reasons for their stress. In a sensitive and moving interview, the story of an Italian immigrant woman's life is told by her daughter, Ana. She speaks about the effects of poorly-paid, health-hazardous factory work combined with primary responsibility for child care and domestic work at home. The changing mother-daughter relationship in a new culture is also discussed. In the second part of the film, Tania, a founding member of the South Asian Women's Group speaks passionately of the racism that daily confronts immigrant women. She goes on to describe some group strategies that will help immigrant women gain more control of their lives."
