Behavior of the Barren-Ground Caribou

"This film relates to the calving and postcalving periods of the barren-ground caribou. A nursery band composed primarily of cows with young calves lives separate from the main herd. We see the calves nursing, at play, reacting to fright, their behaviour during migration and when separated from their mothers.
For a limited period during July, browse on the high willows along the rivers is their prime food. During this time, rapid changes of pelage is noticeable in most individuals and they become less wary due to being bothered greatly by insects. In August, the dark summer pelages makes the animals inconspicuous and most of the population breaks up into small herds which are dispersed over the tundra."
