"A film record of the January 1973 eruption of Kirkjufell, a new volcano on the island of Heimaey, just off the southwestern coast of Iceland. Maps show the location of the island, the volcano's proximity to the town of Vestmannaeyjar, and the eruption's progress from January 23 to January 31. Footage includes aerial shots of the eruption, some with the town in the foreground; shots of the steaming ocean tide rolling over newly cooled lava at the water's edge; and shots of people chipping at partially cooled lava and photographing the turbulent ocean."
